Annotations and editorial comments on the book, Columbia, Capital City of South Carolina..., 1936-1967.

Comments, clippings, editorial notes and other information, ca. 1936-1960s, recorded by M.B. Meriwether in her copy of an anthology of historical essays compiled and published in 1936 at the time of the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of Columbia, S.C.; includes signatures of all eight commissioners who contributed essays to this volume edited by Helen Kohn Hennig. Topics discussed include schools and education, arts and letters, churches and houses of worship; African Americans; sports and organizations. Annotations correct or expand details in the text on such matters as dates, locations, names, etc., such as an image from Harper's Weekly, 8 Apr. 1865, which shows Union soldiers raising an American flag on the old S.C. Statehouse, a structure that burned during Feb. 1865: "this is an impossible picture..." (p. 43); several references to Finley Park [then known as Sidney Park], including a photograph, "View of Sidney Park, 1905" (p. 247), with Meriwether's comment "But it was destroyed in 1900." Chapters that include annotations and/or clippings relate to schools (such as the Ursuline Convent school); architecture and historic buildings (such as the demolished Kinard House, formerly located on the "s[outh] e[ast] corner of Lady and Marion" Streets, p.11), and a photograph of "slave warehouse of Charles Mercer Logan" formerly located at the southwest corner of Senate and Assembly Streets near his home (p.20); literature and theatre (re William Gilmore Simms, etc.); sports and social groups (re Richland Volunteer Rifles, from The State newspaper, 25 Oct. 1937); African Americans (re the Howard School, operated from 1867-1916, "named for Gen. O.O. Howard of Gen. Sherman's staff...", p. 311) and education (re Dickerson Theological Seminary of the AME Church, p. 312); transportation (re quote from Mr. T.C. Williams re his operation of a steamboat line to Georgetown, S.C.); Irish in S.C. during 19th century; her annotations included refinements to the index, in which she noted omitted referencess to "Sidney Park" [now Finlay Park] as well as citing her own comments; errata sheet of corrections; and clipping, 1967, re republication of this book.
